 The Islamic Republic is the current extremist government that is ruling Iran today. The vast majority of Iranians do not want this government in power and are fighting for a complete revolution. The Islamic Republic, also known as the Islamic regime, continuously brutalizes women, children, religious minorities, ethnic minorities, and the LGBTQ+ community. The Islamic Regime is also the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism. The Islamic Republic has led its country to an extreme economic crisis for its people, while its leaders are thriving.  

 There are many flags that have been flown over Iran, but to make things simple, if you see the flag with the Islamic symbol in the middle, that is the flag of the Islamic Regime that is currently ruling Iran today. The flag with the lion in the middle is the flag that represents a free Iran, pre-Islamic Republic. The flags you will see protestors carrying will either be the flag with the lion, held with pride, or the flag with the Islamic symbol defaced.   

 Iranian women began cutting their hair in protest of the Islamic Republic as a statement against oppression and the laws for compulsory hijab (head covering) for women. It was done as an act of defiance in honor of Mahsa Amini who was arrested for allegedly wearing her hijab incorrectly and was beaten to the point of death by the government’s morality police.   

 Ancient Iran was historically known as Persia. Most Iranian people use the two interchangeably.   

 Farsi is the predominant language in Iran.   

 It is correctly pronounced ee-RON. Not eye-RAN.  

 Iran is located between Central Asia, South Asia, and the Arab countries of the Middle East. This position, and its access to the Persian Gulf in the south, have made Iran an important country throughout history.
